HEALTH CARE REFORM: AN INSURANCE COMPANY INSIDER SPEAKS OUT (An Update)


Guest: Wendell Potter, author of DEADLY SPIN: An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR Is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans

This program originally aired in 2011, shortly after Wendell Potter's book DEADLY SPIN was published. As we await the Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act this month, Wendell Potter reflects on how he found himself in the center of the current debate, the history of health care in the United States, and the insurance industry's influence on the message.

A former journalist, for twenty years Wendell Potter worked as a senior executive in corporate communications for health insurance companies. In June 2009, Wendell Potter made national headlines when he testified before a senate panel on health care reform. Much of his testimony is shared in this program.

CHILDHOOD FITNESS AND NUTRITION: A RACE AGAINST OBESITY

What is working to fight the rising rate of obesity in children? Tri 4 Schools is confronting this growing health risk by teaching kids about living healthy, active lifestyles through triathlon and other athletic events. A secondary benefit is that proceeds are donated to school health and fitness programs. Katie Hensel founded this non-profit organization in 2011 and is helping Dane County fight childhood obesity in a way that everyone enjoys. Katie talks about the Family Fun Run on June 16th where everyone participates. Then kids get moving at the Middleton Triathlon on August 4.

Joining Katie is Deb Roussos, a registered dietitian at Group Health Cooperative. Her tips for healthy eating for the young growing body go far beyond the fast food temptations. It's really all in the family.

DENISE BROWN, SISTER OF NICOLE BROWN SIMPSON, SPEAKS OUT ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Denise Brown has been an advocate for victims of domestic violence since the murder of her sister, Nicole, in 1994 and has helped raise funds for local shelters across the country. Joining Denise on this program is Shannon Barry, Executive Director of DAIS (Domestic Abuse Intervention Services). On this program, Denise talks about her relationship with her sister, and what she has learned about the Cycle of Abuse. Shannon tells about how this Cycle plays out in Dane County.

Denise Brown will be the keynote speaker at DAIS' 5th Annual Celebrate Independence! Luncheon, Tuesday, June 19th at the Madison Concourse Hotel. Proceeds from the event will directly support DAIS programs and services for victims of domestic violence and their children in Dane County.
