NUTRITIOUS FOOD IS GOOD MEDICINE: MARCH FOR MEALS HIGHLIGHTS SENIOR NUTRITION

Guest:  Linda Lane, Chief Operating Officer, Registered Dietician, and Coordinator, Evening Meals on Wheels - Independent Living, Inc.

March is National Nutrition Month and March for Meals. On this program, Linda Lane talks about how important good nutrition is for all of us and the importance of good nutrition for seniors. Food is medicine, and depending on what we eat or don't include in our diets, our health is affected.  Good nutrition is one of the factors that can keep people healthy after being released from the hospital and can thwart unnecessary readmissions. What are the barriers for seniors eating well, and what help is available to provide seniors and those challenged with making nutritious meals with a well-balanced, healthy meal?

Independent Living's Evening Meals on Wheels and other noon Meals on Wheels programs are available to provide nutritious, delicious meals to those who would not otherwise have them. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated including vegetarian, diabetic and gluten-free requirements. Nutritious food helps sustain healthy living!

For information on volunteering to help with the Evening Meals on Wheels program or to inquire about having meals delivered, call 204-0923, or go to www.IndependentLivingInc.org.

DAIS - JUST A MILLION MILES FROM HOME

Guest:  Shannon Barry, Executive Director, DAIS - Domestic Abuse Intervention Services

On this program, Shannon Barry describes how domestic violence impacts us all - affecting the health of the victim, the family, the workplace and the community. Once considered "out of sight, out of mind," DAIS is taking the domestic abuse conversation out of the shadows and publicly addressing this growing scar in our society.

About 1/3 of cases referred to the Dane County District Attorney's office by local law enforcement agencies are domestic violence related. You will learn about LEAP - the Law Enforcement Advocate Partnership - that will be city wide by the end of summer.

And DAIS is just a million dollars away from opening the doors of the new DAIS Emergency Shelter this summer. This Shelter will provide safety and support to victims of domestic violence and will serve the community as an education and advocacy center.  For more information on the JUST A MILLION MILES FROM HOME Campaign or for information related to domestic abuse issues, go to abuseintervention.org.

NOTE: The deadline to sign up for health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace is March 31. Go to Healthcare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596 to review your options and complete an application. For assistance, go to e4healthwi.org.

Also, the BadgerCare Plus Benchmark and Core Plans end on March 31. New BadgerCare rules apply to enroll in the new plans going into effect on April 1, 2014.
